Preventative Maintenance

What every homeownder should know or consider

These are tips and advice that everyone should know in order to properly maintain certain aspects of your home’s plumbing. They may not completely remove the need for plumbing services but they will definitely help!

  • Do you know where the water shut off valve is to your home and how to use it? We recommend learning this information. There is nothing worse than having a plumbing pipe burst in your home and not knowing how to stop the water from destroying your home and property. Every home should have an accessible valve that turns all the water off to that home.
  • Do you have a septic tank? If so we recommend flushing a small packet or a ½ tsp. of yeast down your toilet every 4 to 6 months. This will help promote enzyme growth which aids in the decomposition process within your septic tank. It is also helpful to have it pumped every 4 to 6 years depending on use.
  • Do you live in a Pre-manufactured home or have pre-1970’s plumbing in your home? We recommend that once a month you fill your sink bowls with hot water and then drain them as quickly as possible, this helps prevent the buildup of grease and food in your drain pipes helping to prevent sink stoppages. You can add vinegar to the kitchen sink to help if you have been getting an odor.
  • How old are your washing machine hoses? To prevent washing machine hoses from bursting we recommend that they be changed every 5 years. This preventative maintenance could save you thousands of dollars in property damage.
